Employment Coaching - For the Individual
A "Just-in-Time" Program
So, what’s a Just-in-Time program? Good question. Here is, hopefully, a reasonable answer: A Just-in-Time program focuses on what you need when you need it. For example – if you have a good resume that is working for you but you are not getting to the second round of interviews, you don’t need to waste your money on a resume. I mention this not only to exhibit my natural flair for the obvious, but to show we would begin by taking a deeper dive into the interview process including a video role play interview so you can see what the rest of the world sees.
Also you should be able to ‘pay by the drink’ for these services. You should not and you must not spend thousands of dollars for an employment coach. My fees are offered in six hour blocks and, I believe, are reasonable. Should you wish to discuss my fee structure please call me and we can discuss this and your specific coaching focus. Your focus might be on more than one aspect of job search. That’s okay.
Regarding my fees, please give the following serious consideration………….if you are looking at this service as an expense, don’t do it! If, however, you are interested in making an investment to expedite your job search, then it is up to both of us to define your specific need(s), your expectations and your return. Regarding the return on your investment, I will ask only three things of you:
• You do what you say you are going to do
• You are prepared for our meetings
• You are honest in your efforts
There is an old Chinese proverb that states: "Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand." In other words, important lessons are seldom taught. They must to be lived to be understood.
This program is designed to help you secure your ideal position as soon as possible. It’s about focus. It’s about substance. And it’s about results. The key is in the preparation. The value is in the coaching.
If your ego will not allow you to move outside your comfort zone, this program may not be the one for you. Your next job is to find your next job and it’s a full time job.
Although there are seldom easy answers to finding your ideal job, there are simple ones. After 23 years, I have learned that it is not the big things as much as the little things and the sequence in which these little things occur that make all the difference in a productive job search or career change.
Research has shown that two-thirds of all individuals obtain their next position through networking. You’ve probably heard many times, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” The often forgotten “third leg” of this networking stool is, “who knows you”. So, as a matter of course, we will work together to expand your network to include peers, industry leaders and search firms.
While positive networking is an art, it’s impossible to overlook the groundbreaking science that proves the power of networking and the small worlds this process creates. What can you do with the knowledge that you are only six handshakes away from anyone in the world? Start by recognizing the following:
• Accept that good things happen to good networkers
• Expect that the ‘small worlds’ phenomenon happens all the time
• Tap into your network - it is always on
• Be in charge of manufacturing your own luck
While not all successful people are positive networkers, all positive networkers are successful people.
The late John Wooden, basketball coach at UCLA who won more NCAA titles than any coach to date, never talked about winning. He preached preparation.
A few “preparation” questions to consider:
• What does your ideal job look like?
• Is your next position another position?
• If not, what is it?
• What new skills or new perspectives do you need to acquire to support achievement of your goals?
• What have you tried/thought of already?
• What are the roadblocks do you expect or know about?
• What are your key differentiators in the marketplace?
• How do you articulate your value?
• What does your executive networking base look like?
• What resources do you need?
• What are you worth in today’s job market?
• What is your plan to achieve the top end of the salary range?
• What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
• Where do you see yourself in the next three years? The next year? The next six months?
• What are the barriers from preventing you from being where you want to be?
• Who do you go to when your hair is “on fire”?
• Why should someone hire you?
If this process was easy, anybody could do it. It’s not as easy as you’d like it to be. However, it’s not as difficult as you think it is. Throughout the process, you will have my dedicated attention.
What do you need to know about me that’s not in my bio?
• I am your professional accountability partner.
• I deliberately work with a small number of clients at any one time and make every effort to return calls within two hours.
• I am available 24/7 because this is what I would expect if I were you.
• I will not chase you to help you.
• I am only interested in results. I am not interested is reasons.
With preparation comes knowledge. With knowledge comes confidence. With confidence comes the courage to extend your reach.
